We were ready to go . . . FINALLY . . . the winter weather was extremely difficult this year. We fought with the weather for over two months and this was the first opportunity we were going to have to attempt our first ever pond hockey tournament. Unable to finish the tournament over the weekend due to weather. We rescheduled the conclusion of the event to February 19th, 2016. After a couple of weeks of waiting, we came to the conclusion that the first set of games would not be completed due to poor weather. We are sorry, but thank you very much for your willingness to a part of our event.

We would start of the tournament season with the C Bracket and it would be the Jabronies (Ethan Miles) taking on BLB (Steve Buck) in the official first game or any tournament. It would be a back-and-forth battle all game long, but it would be the Jabronies taking the event opener (18-14). First time AEA team the Puck Stop Here (Alan Higley) would take the ice against the Moose Knuckles (David Lyons) and this lopsided game went heavily into the Moose Knuckles hands (23-6). We would move on to our third match-up of the night, where Rez Lounge (Darren Martucci) would play the early game winner the Jabronies. The Jabronies would have another close game, but they edged out Rez Lounge by a single goal (13-12). Our final game of the open night would be BTPC (Brad DeVries) playing their fellow lake shore friends, the Moose Knuckles. The Moose Knuckles would not fare as well as they did in their first game of the evening, dropping this game with a final score of 13 to 9.

On Saturday morning we would see BLB and the Moose Knuckles. Both teams weren't ready to concede the game, thus traded goals all morning. It would eventually be BLB taking the game (9-8). The ice began to thaw as the temperature began to raise, and the Puck Stops Here would do their best to not end up losing a second straight game. As the game proceeded Rez Lounge kept the pressure and would edge out the Puck Stops Here by a lone goal (9-8). We would only have one more game left for the day, and the last of the opening weekend of Dekes & Dangles I. The Jabronies would take the ice against BTPC in a brunch time matinee . . . The Jabronies would eventually pull out the win with a final score of 9 to 5.

Due to weather we were unable to complete the C Bracket and thus the first of many Dekes & Dangles I tournaments had been cancelled.

We were finally able to put on a full show for Dekes & Dangles I, and it would be the COED Bracket. We played over Valentine's weekend and the love for hockey was in the air. We had a great turn out with 8 teams playing for the right to call themselves a Dekes & Dangles Champion.

Our tournament would begin on a cold Friday night, where American Hockey Story (Jerrica Kaye) would face off against SPC (Brent Belanger) in the first official game of any COED Dekes & Dangles bracket. SPC would send American Hockey Story to the Loser's Bracket and move on to the next round (13-7). Next up would be the Kings Room (Andy Skiver) where they would have a rough time against the power house team of VanDam (Neil Roelofs). VanDam would double the goals (22) that the Kings Room would score (11) and would advance in the Winners Bracket where they would meet SPC on Saturday. The Holland team known as The Gong Show (Jody Immink) would look to send a message to the Wild Cards (Annie Devaney, Nichole Werkema) and defeat them with a very close 7 to 5 game. The Wild Cards would now what and see who they would play in the first round of the Loser's Bracket on Saturday. In our final game of the the night, the Harry Beavers (Kelly Sherburn) would fall short to a coherent BTPC (Brad DeVries) team (13-8). BTPC would move on to face The Gong Show while the Harry Beavers would test their luck in the Loser's Bracket.

Then sun has only just barely peaked over the horizon when American Hockey Story and the Kings Room would hit the ice. The Kings Room would hold a comfortable pace over their competitors; winning by six goals, they would advance. American Hockey Story is the first official team to be eliminated from tournament play at a Dekes & Dangles tournament. They wold move on to the Benders Championship and wait for for their opponent to be announced. Our second game in the Loser's Bracket would feature the Wild Cards and Harry Beavers. The Wild Cards would keep pace with the Harry Beavers and eventually take them out of contention with a final score of 12 to 9.

The afternoon warming up into the low 20's, SPC would take the ice against VanDam in the first game of the day in the Winner's Bracket. There wasn't much room on the ice at all as both team would claw, dig and scrap every second of the game. When the ice chips settled; it was VanDam edging out SPC (12-9). Our second Winner's Bracket game of the day was set to be a barn burner, with The Gong Show ready to flex their hockey muscles against BTPC. The Gong Show would make quick work of their challenger (21-9), and send BTPC to the basement to face the Kings Room later on in the day. SPC, now in the bottom bracket had to go head-to-head with the Wild Cards. This game would even a more intense game for SPC then their previous one, but once again they would fall short and be eliminated from the tournament. The Wild Cards kept their hopes a live a close win (11-9) and what to see who they would be playing next! Next we would have another do die game to see who would go home and who would move on. BTPC and the Kings Room would stay tight all game long, so tight in fact that would end the game in tie. We decided that a shootout would be done to declare a winner. After a nap and several rounds of the shootout it would be Colleen Bennett that would get the game winning goal versus BTPC (12-11), and the Kings Room would make it to the next round. Colleen, would score the one and only shootout game winner in the history of Dekes & Dangles. After Dekes & Dangles I, we changed the rules to be a sudden death final period.

[champions/benders_ddi_coed.jpg]We're now set for the final push to the first ever Dekes & Dangles champion. Our final game of the Winner's Bracket was set and it would be either The Gong Show or VanDam that be our first team to go to the finals. The typical strong VanDam struggled with The Gong Show in a very close game. Neither teams would crack the ten goal mark. Defense was both of these teams primary focus. At the end of regulation it would VanDam that would move on to the finals and The Gong Show sent down to fight their way back in (9-6). The Kings Room would go for it one more time, but their legs we're not their. Rumors of the long shootout drained the Kings Room team for their match up with the Wild Cards. Their tired legs wouldn't be able to keep up as they fell short with a final score of 19 to 11. All eyes were on the Wild Cards as they once again advanced one step closer to the finals where they would meet The Gong Show. The Gong Show had other ideas and they we're ready to go home either. The winner of this game would move on to face VanDam in the the very first Dekes & Dangles Finals. The Wild Cards push themselves to a new level, finding energy they shouldn't have had in their reserves. They would defeat The Gong Show (20-13) and earn a break before moving on to the finals.

We would have our first Benders Championship at a Dekes & Dangles tournament and it would American Hockey Story versus the Harry Beavers. The Harry Beavers would have no problem with bringing the game home and claiming victory over American Hockey Story (15-5). Now rested up we move on to our finals match up between VanDam and the Wild Cards. Their was no love loss between these two teams, they put in their best efforts and would fight through to the finish. At the end of the day it was VanDam taking home the official first championship of any Dekes & Dangles tournament (11-7).

With the win at Dekes & Dangles I, Neil Roelofs would be one Kegger Cup win away from completing the trifecta of tournament wins and being the first All Around Champion of An Edge Above.

Brad DeVries says:
" Awesome tournament/ice! I know you guys want the ice perfect but that's about as good as it gets for pond hockey. "
